While much has been made about the "unexpectedness" of certain stallions as sire of classic winners, the female families of many of these classic winners have been strong. Since '89:

Easy Goer: Alydar out of champion Relaxing
Summer Squall: Storm Bird out of champion broodmare Weekend Surprise
Pine Bluff: Danzig out of top producer Rowdy Angel
A.P. Indy: Seattle Slew out of Weekend Surprise
Go And Go: closely related to Twilight Agenda, Media Puzzle, Refuse To Bend
Timber Country: Woodman out of champion broodmare Fall Aspen
Louis Quatorze: out of top producer On To Royalty
Editor's Note: out of top producer Beware of the Cat
Touch Gold: out of top producer Passing Mood
Charismatic: out of top producer Bali Babe
Go For Gin: out of top producer Never Knock
Super Saver: out of good producer and well-bred Supercharger
Lemon Drop Kid: out of top producer Charming Lassie, from family of Lassie Dear
Birdstone: out of top producer Dear Birdie
Commendable: closely related to Fappiano, Clabber Girl, Keeper Hill, etc.

This year, the winners of the Preakness and Belmont were out of mares who had already produced at least one other Grade 1 winner. The Derby winner, Animal Kingdom, is closely related to the streaking Daveron, who has won 3 or 4 stakes races this year including last weekend's Ballston Spa.
