I think a lot of people are terrified about ceasing to exist, so they need to persuade themselves there's something after. Who knows? Well, all of us will, eventually.

I'm with you on Hell being a ridiculous concept. If a religion needs to threaten you with eternal punishment to get you to follow it, what does that say about the appeal of the religion on its own merits?

I agree big time on that. I often get remarks, if and when I do decide to speak up against the tide, that I will have to face my maker at the gates of heaven, and apparently will be sent to everlasting torture. Why? Because I did not bow down to Him. It says a lot about that sub-section of Christians who are only in it due to this fear

The whole concept of hell was a big factor in me leaving the Christian faith, also...the idea that god is masculine thereby relegating half of the population to a lesser status. I'm much more comfortable in the belief that earthly male/female roles don't apply to the maker of all.
