" If you believe what you like in the gospel, and reject what you don't like, it is not the gospel you believe, but yourself....Augustine"

I tend to agree with that, as you seem to. However, I take this to be more than sufficient reason to throw the entire gospel in the trash, as it certainly fails horribly as any moral authority. Don't become like the murderers of the U.N. workers and mindlessly follow the wicked works of sick ancient men, use your reason!

If you want to be a "free agent" in the universe that's your choice. While you speak of Islam in the broad sense, you've completely missed the point about the quote. I wont debate your misguided view of the gospel, but as Bob Dylan
so eloquently sang in his song "you gotta serve somebody" you make your choice by default.

“Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers. ....Jesse Ventura”

Have to admit, I expected a harsher response:tro:. I think I got the point of the quote, but felt I could provide a different angle on it.
Now, Bob Dylan, perhaps his lyrics were God given

My point was that the gospel as reference is often twisted, perhaps as twisted as the source you used regarding global warming

Timm, the problem isn't religion, it's how some folks pervert it to serve their own purpose. I have the upmost respect for all the world's religions but barely recognize them much of the time, be it the ramblings of the Christian right, the hatred of radical Islam etc.

Yeah, I know he's dying of esophagul cancer.

BTW, we don't choose by default so much as the followers of religion do. It takes far more courage to swim against the stream of religious belief than it does to blindly accept one's forefathers thinking

But, I can't argue effectively the existence of God (nor can you, I imagine). I think the best any of us can do on discussion boards like this is to be civil, not use inflammatory rhetoric, and above all try to have some meaningful discourse with the other side. It's easy to come on here and talk up a storm with those who are in agreement with ourselves. What the world needs is for opposing sides of thought to work with each other, really listen, and perhaps have some influence

I was born and raised a Catholic. Now, the Pope, there is no defense of him or the Vatican. I hope you will agree with me there. The Catholic Church clearly is a safe haven for pedophiles. Ratzinger should be imprisoned for helping to cover up and continue widespread rape of children. Please tell me that you agree with this.

You need not join an organized religion to live an examined life

Being a free agent is preferred to living my life in fear of Big Brother (God) watching my every move, as well as persecuting me for my thoughts. What kind of loving god is that? What is your god that would have us burn in hell for eternity, merely for thinking the thoughts that he must have given us the instinct and impulses in the first place.

Walk away from your god of hate, Timmi

I agree with many of your points but I think it's unfair to catagorize the Christian god as a god of hate, don't confuse the message with some of the messengers. I was a Christian most of my life but the many rules and some theological concerns led me to Witchcraft. One thing we (witches) believe is that in reality, all the world's religions are worshiping the same supreme being using different names and constructs so all religions, if followed, lead to the devine.

A friend of mine is a Gnostic, some of what he's been showing to me via video info is interesting, especially regarding our level of consciousness

What I find rather offensive in everyday conversation is the idea tha God would play favorites with different countries or individuals.

Whether or not I pray for the Japanese survivors can not, and should not, have any effect on what God does from this point forward.

Why should God bless America anymore than another country? God Bless America is an arrogant, selfish request.

Again, I agree but that is the messengers not the message. Folks always want to believe they are the "chosen ones" rather than accept that we are ALL children of God/Allah/The One or whatever name one uses.

or maybe just the children of our Parents?

The concept of hell alone makes me not be able to believe in any of that stuff. Its a ridiculous concept. The fact that someone like Gandhi could burn in eternal hell because he didnt accept the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior is f-ing crazy.

I think when you die you are just plain dead, and that is too difficult of a concept for people to grasp so they believe in heaven.

Some of us believe the soul is immortal but have different concepts than heaven/hell. I agree that the very concept of hell just doesn't make sense.

I think a lot of people are terrified about ceasing to exist, so they need to persuade themselves there's something after. Who knows? Well, all of us will, eventually.

I'm with you on Hell being a ridiculous concept. If a religion needs to threaten you with eternal punishment to get you to follow it, what does that say about the appeal of the religion on its own merits?

I agree big time on that. I often get remarks, if and when I do decide to speak up against the tide, that I will have to face my maker at the gates of heaven, and apparently will be sent to everlasting torture. Why? Because I did not bow down to Him. It says a lot about that sub-section of Christians who are only in it due to this fear
