Monterey Jazz's 118 was basically earned in the same fashion that Commentator's 119 was earlier in the year.

He was uncontested on a clear lead through a very soft opening 1/4 mile. 4K claimers in the very next race on the card would post a faster opening quarter fraction at the same distance.

Monterey Jazz deserves some credit for the tremendously visually impressive nature of the win - a very cut and dry 118 Beyer with the rider up in the saddle "looking like a jump rider" the entire length of the stretch - but when the 1st quarter was posted... you basically expect something gigantic from him with the tactical position he was in.

Even with the trip and all - running five furlongs in 58 flat from the 3/4 pole to the 1/8th pole is something pretty remarkable in a two-turn route over a track that isn't especially fast.

The connections of Monterey Jazz could easily steal another large purse by taking the Lone Star Park Handicap on Memorial Day ($400,000) but it's only a Grade 3. I hope he goes to the Met Mile because jcs11204 says that Commentator will run them all off their feet and prognostication is that guy's middle name.

Didn't bet the race but that was a good price on this horse. I thought the Super wasn't all that tough to catch ... $11k for a buck. In Summ ran awful.

Any word on a BSF for Pepper's Pride? Also, if anyone could find it for the Bosselman/Gus Fonner Memorial that was at Fonner Saturday, that'd be nice too. I live in Kansas, and know a guy who races the Kansas/Nebraska circuit.

The Nutz received an 18 BSF for his win over 1 1/16 miles in 1:47.40 Saturday in the $75,000 Bosselman/Gus Fonner Memorial. Andy Beyer has a hard time making figures at that distance for Fonner though because it's like 12 or 13 turns.

Haha, that's only too true. It's like a 5f track? Not for sure, but it's short.

Oh, that makes a lot more sense. I didn't think an 18 sounded right, lol. I mean, I know we don't have the greatest quality racing but I didn't think it was that bad.

Russell and Hellen Foutz Distaff (SRP): Peppers Pride (J. Marr/C. Madeira) - 89

Had her trainer Joel Marr on ATR last night... About as humble a guy as you could come across.

AND...

Bosselman/Gus Fonner (Fon): The Nutz (S. Hall/D. Herber Jr.) - 78

You mean 25k claimers don't always win 250k races?

It'll be interesting to see how bold he gets with this horse this summer. I don't think he'll stray too far from his Cby/Tam comfort zone.
