![]() The pipeline is critical to Canada, which must have infrastructure in place to export its growing oil sands production from northern Alberta. The region has the world's third largest oil reserves with 170 billion barrels of proven reserves. Daily production of 1.5 million barrels from the oil sands is expected to increase to 3.7 million in 2025. Only Saudi Arabia and Venezuela have more reserves.
MacDougall said Harper also reiterated to Obama that Canada will look to sell its oil to Asia. Harper previously called Obama's decision to delay the Keystone XL delay a "wake up call" and said Canada is far too dependent on the U.S., which Canada relies on for 97 percent of its energy exports. With the product of oil sands and pipeline delivery to the U.S. under perennial clouds of environmental objection, Canada wants to ensure a market for the growing production. The price of North American oil also sells for less than oil sold internationally because of a glut of Canadian oil in Cushing, Oklahoma, so shipping the oil to Asia would command a better price. Alberta Premier Alison Redford said Obama's decision strengthens Canada's resolve to pursue access to alternative markets. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/46046024...il_and_energy/ was watching cnn this afternoon while huffing and puffing away on the treadmill at the gym; they said about 6k jobs to build the pipeline. of course i have no idea how many it takes to maintain it once it's in place-but you'd have to think a few thousand new jobs there would have an ancillary effect on economies in the regions the pipeline will traverse. so, obama tells canada to forget it because he wants to play politics, because the republicans wanted to play politics. that's great! marvelous. once again the american public gets the shaft because our bozos in office want to try to play some stupid game. meanwhile, canada will still do what they've got to do, but now maybe another country-they mentioned china- will reap the benefits. that's just fantastic.

The pipeline will be reviewed again when they submit those things. The President made sure that his current denial included that provision. BTW - it is the Republican Governor of Nebraska that is leading the charge for delaying the pipeline until environmental threats can be mitigated. Quote:
The black pipeline, below, already exists. If the XL addition is built, that increases the cost to us of moving our own oil in the midwest. This is NOT regular oil pipeline. This is abrasive, tar sand pipeline. It is not the same thing. There have already been 11 spills on the existing pipeline over it's existence. ![]()

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/19/us...ng-voters.html Poll Sees Shift in Independent Vote, a Hurdle for ObamaBy JEFF ZELENY and DALIA SUSSMAN Published: January 18, 2012 President Obama opens his re-election bid facing significant obstacles among independent voters, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll, with the critical piece of the electorate that cemented his victory four years ago open to denying him a second term. and further down: “I trusted Obama would bring fresh ideas to the country and improve the economy, even though he was not experienced. It didn’t happen,” said Jay Hernandez, 54, a credit manager from Miami who said that he is not aligned with either party, in a follow-up interview. “If there were another Democratic candidate I might reconsider, but I won’t vote for Barack Obama.” of course, republicans aren't exactly a great alternative: the poll suggests that Republicans have grown less satisfied with their choices. Nearly 7 in 10 Republican voters across the country said they now want more options, a probable reflection of conservative unease about Mr. Romney and the remaining candidates.

Sigh I guess not Nebraska's Republican Gov. Dave Heineman, whose state is a key part of the Keystone XL oil pipeline debate, expressed his disappointment with the final decision the Obama administration made yesterday to kill the project. "I want to say I'm very disappointed," Heineman told POLITICO. "I think the president made a mistake." http://www.politico.com/politico44/2...ke-111473.html

There is plenty more out there, over the past year, about Heineman's opposition. His opposition is why there was supposed to be an alternative plan avoiding the aquafier, which TransCanada did not yet submit, thus why State and Obama have so far not approved Keystone XL. Quote:

![]() so I guess the "cover" is now gone...
"I fully expect we could get it done certainly in the early September, August time frame," the governor told Fox News on Thursday. "I would send the letter back to the president of the United States saying we approve it and if he were decisive, he could turn around and approve it shortly thereafter, well before the November election."
