I like it (and I'm always overly critical)!

Very nice.

More importantly, when do they announce the venue for 2012? And who is the current favorite?
Personally I would love to see Belmont back in the mix again.

Separate the spires. Change the year and put it within borders. Replace "Churchill Downs" with "Louisville Kentucky". Presto, new logo.

They have made these generic ever since 2008.

Here is last year

2009

2008

Compare to
2007

2006

2005

Notice how the venue used to be predominent. Now it is BC colors and logo that dominate. Really takes some of the local flavor away.

Maybe having the event had the same venue in consecutive years takes some starch and creativeness out of the people coming up with the logo's and merchandise.

I really doubt it. The TC races get a fresh logo every year and they are in the same place. Some are better than others, but they don't all look the same every year. There has been a change in the philosopy of the BC people dating back to 2008. They have branded the event more thoroughly, deemphisizing the location and emphasizing their organization. The logos are simply an outgrowth of that.

Yeah, but realistically wouldn't you think that in terms of just merchandising, that the sport gets more collectors and even outsiders buying things from the TC series? Obviously those numbers would probably skyrocket if a horse is heading to NY with a chance of winning the TC.

I always tend to think that mainstream America only cares about 3 races a year. The BC is more for the die hard followers of the sport. While these people do spend money on merchandise, they might be less likely to splurge for more merchandise that is pretty much as the previous year.

Sure they do, but to be honest, these logos don't cost a ton to generate. People going to the track on BC day are not the day to day clientel, I'm sure you know. They go for the event and do buy merchandise. I used to get a t-shirt when I went, but sure didn't bother this year. I missed the CA ones, too far to go, though I do have a 2008 somewhere I got for free. Never realized what was on it actually was the logo as it looked so crappy in comparison to the previous years. Just thought it was a cheap giveaway.

But the logo itself is not just merchandise. It is on everything BC related, web site, advertising, publications, tickets. It is the first thing you see on anything BC related and as such, they are using it to brand the event as BC, not BC at X Downs. I don't think many players really understand how this organization works and how it relates to the "host" track.

I really hate that they want to take out the host track. They ruined March Madness that way

No original thought anywhere

just repackage it and sell it to the next shmo
