The Guardian
has been bringing the issue up all summer; first, taking the view that the multiple Ballydoyle entries in major races may lead to suspicion, even if there's nothing particularly nefarious afoot:
Pacemakers are good for top-class racing, particularly when it comes to preserving stamina in the breed. They help to ensure that 12-furlong races are won by proper 12-furlong horses.

But does anyone need three or four? O'Brien leaves nothing to chance, which is one reason why he has achieved so much. This, though, may be one of those times when you can have too much of a good thing.
Duke of Marmalade's International Stakes win brought the topic back up to the surface, with Lydia Hislop arguing that the use of team tactics was precisely what was going on:
THE LAND OF MAKEBELIVE

O'BRIEN & O'DONOGHUE TO FACE JUDDMONTE ENQUIRY
Following a week of intense
scrutiny by the British media, the British Horseracing
Authority has announced it will ask trainer Aidan
O'Brien and jockey Colm O'Donoghue to face a disciplinary
panel with regard to possible breaches of the
>team tactics= rule during the running of the
G1 Juddmonte International at Newmarket Aug. 23.
"We have completed the review process and written to
Aidan O'Brien and Colm O'Donoghue confirming that
they will need to appear before the Disciplinary Panel in
connection with a possible breach of Rule 153(iv) in the
Juddmonte International, said the BHA's Paul Struthers.
"We are obviously conscious of the interest this will
generate, but, having reviewed the video and read
comments attributed to Johnny Murtagh in the press, it
was felt that a formal enquiry into the incident had to
be held. This will ensure that the matter is considered
thoroughly, fairly and openly. This is the first time we
have reviewed a race for a possible breach of >team
tactics' since the rules changed in 2007, and we are
satisfied that there has been no other race where an
enquiry should have been held. I would also like to
make clear that there is no possibility of the result of
the Juddmonte International being affected." The race,
which was won by Ballydoyle star Duke of Marmalade
(Ire) (Danehill), sparked debate which questioned the
riding performance of O'Donoghue aboard Red Rock
Canyon (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) as well as subsequent
press comments attributed to winning jockey
Johnny Murtagh.

ITS CLEAR....... THEY WILL NOT DO NOTHING .

Busy Ballydoyle

Things are a bit quiet Stateside, but there's been a flurry of activity for Ballydoyle in the past week. First, it was announced that the British Horseracing Authority was going to investigate a charge of team tactics (as discussed here last week) over the way the Juddmonte International was ridden, with Red Rock Canyon politely giving way to Duke of Marmalade. While it seems the results of the race would not be affected, there would be some financial implications for trainer Aiden O'Brien (pictured) and jockey Colm O'Donoghue:
If O'Donoghue is found in breach, however, O'Brien will be deemed to be in breach unless he can satisfy the BHA's disciplinary panel that he instructed his jockey to treat every other horse in the race without favour. If found guilty, O'Donoghue faces a riding ban of up to 10 days, while O'Brien could be fined up to £10,000. In any event, the result of the race will not be altered.
Let's review what Johnny Murtagah, who was aboard Duke of Marmalade, said post-race:
"I was always going to follow Colm," Murtagh reportedly told the Sunday Times. "I didn't want to start worrying about other horses. I just wanted to worry about myself and Colm and I said to him, 'When you get to the four marker, just ease off and give me the passage through'. It's what Ballydoyle's all about."
The inquiry will begin September 22nd, but there's plenty to keep the press percolating over in the meantime -- Duke of Marmalade had been set to line up for his sixth Group 1 of the year in the Irish Champion Stakes on Saturday, but rain and resulting soft ground could prevent a rematch against New Approach (who was third in their last meeting).

But the ground may not be the only concern -- O'Brien had earlier suggested that the Duke might still be
a bit tired after his previous controversial effort, and that combined with the forecast for rain meant that rumors of his non-appearance have been swirling to the point that betting was suspended in some corners. We'll see...in any event, Red Rock Canyon and King of Rome (whom I can only assume is named for the famous racing pigeon of folk song fame) are both in the race for Ballydoyle as well. Any one of them could give O'Brien Group 1 win number 19 for the season.

Henrythenavigator has a tough weekend assignment as well; he is scheduled to take on top fillies Darjina, Goldikova and Natagora in the Prix du Moulin (yet another Group 1) at Longchamp - although exactly who lines up will depend on the weather.

And if Yeats does decide to go for the Melbourne Cup in November, he'll have the
highest weight in the field to carry - he's been assigned 59 kg (about 130 pounds), with last year's winner, Efficient, being accorded 58 kg (about 128 pounds). Some entrants have been given as little as 53 kg (about 117 pounds), so if he does go ahead, he has no small task ahead of him. It's going to be a busy time for Ballydoyle.

This is really bothering you, huh?

Calm down, take a deep breath and think of something nice.

Shall I look for a Papal Bull replay or something?

My favorite things

Coffee and cigars and sun rising workouts,
Jogging and breezing and hotwalker coolouts.
Poultices, bridles and snaffles with rings.
These are a few of my favorite things.

Trifectas, Pick sixes, rolling daily doubles,
Arlington, Hawthorne, buck Friday beer bubbles.
Win photos going your way of all things.
These are a few of my favorite things.

Spectacular Bid, Secretariat, Kelso,
Ruffian, Fager, Damascus and Forego.
Completely obsessing with the Sport of Kings.
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the turf's off, when the field's small,
when Waldrop makes me mad.
I simply remember my favorite things
and then I don't feel so bad.

If they run, if the Duke actually goes, Seamus has the mount.
