You have to keep in mind though with the amount he is insured for at the slightest hint of an injury they could step in and say they won't insure him if he continues to run (like they did with Afleet Alex).
there's no undefeated tc winner-that would be his legacy, and set him apart-if he wins.. if he loses, i agree they won't risk a second loss. hasn't anything to do with what the stud fee will be set at, and has everything to do with the same circumstances that made smarty and alex disappear after new york.
they say they're interested in the the travers and bcc--but smarty was going to run again, as was alex. we know how that turned out. remember pletchers comments a couple years ago about this very subject? he said no way a tc winner would run again, that's it's just the way it is. and i think he's right.

The popular horizontal betting options have done wonders for the egos of trainers that win little races.

I'll throw out a crazy idea. Given the possible plans/synthetic issues, forget the Travers for Big Brown. How about Big Brown v. Curlin in the Woodward? That would be a return to the "good old days."

Saratoga version. A true, two-turn 9F. It would be interesting to see what that kind of race could draw on that weekend. Doubt a record crowd, however, for the reasons you stated.
