The pitches at British racetracks were auctioned off a few years back with some individuals paying up to $200,000 for the right to have the 1st pitch pick every day they attend tracks like Ascot and Cheltenham.

Thousands of people who now wager at home and have no interest in attending the track would come to the track in order to shop around to get the best prices.

Racing would be nothing without oncourse bookmakers on track over here. It gives people different places to bet, and as was said before it gives the punters a chance to shop for the best prices.
