Sometimes the same horse will react differently from race to race. Unfortunately ... you can only discern this after the race ... not before.

I totally agree. Each situation is different, as is each horse.
If it's a 2yo running so green vs a 4yo that can't find the hole, you just need to know whether you're comparing apples with apples or apples with oranges.
