My life's path has had it's share of twists and turns, my dad was in the navy in WWII and he taught me respect for the brave men and women who serve, especially those who honor a commitment to country above personal gain. Growing up in the 60's, I became active in the Civil Rights movement and that led me to the anti-war movement which I embraced even though I saw hypocrisy in privileged youth who pretended to be anti war in order to avoid the draft. James Drought's great book, "the Secret" influenced my thinking leading me to the conclusion that wars are waged by the rich and powerful using the rest of us as pawns....still when I was drafted, I took that faithful step forward and became a pawn. I saw friends die but I was lucky and came back in one piece, and much more mature. People have mistaken me for anti-military, nothing could be further from the truth...I am pro-military, just anti rich and powerful...as Dylan sang...the "Masters of War" . Bottom line, I have the greatest respect for any young person who chooses service, even over a full ride to LSU...perhaps you should rethink this one Dell!

Hey if that's the reason he enlisted my sincere apologies and thanks for his service. But the way his mother told the story it was for an education in a trade (while being paid) that would reward him monetarily in the private world upon his discharge.

I then compared the lifetime benefits monetarily between a college educated Nuclear Engineer and a Nuclear Technician despite the lack of pay while attending college.

Anyway thanks to you and all including Danzig who have served (I didn't) and ultimate respect and appreciation to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and their surviving families.

Somer, you remind me so much of a friend of mine who died almost 13 years ago. He had been a drill sergeant in Vietnam, and when I knew him, while he still had the drill sergeant temper (lord, that man could shout when he was angry), he was by then Wiccan, very to the left, and incredibly kind to his friends. He also was of the opinion that war was a rich man's game, played with poor men as the pawns. You guys would probably have gotten along famously.

He was working in the WTC on 9/11 and suffered a heart attack that day that he never really recovered from, he died less than a year later. I still often think of him.
