![]() The annals of American Timber Steeplechase racing will compare Vintage Vinnie’s epic performance winning the 2021 Maryland Hunt Cup to Secretariat’s win in the 1973 Belmont Stakes.
Yes, it was that special. Vintage Vinnie won the 124th edition of the Maryland Hunt Cup by 112 ½ lengths in 8:22 3/5 for 4 miles, smashing the prior record of 8:25 3/5 set by Young Dubliner in 2002. The My Lady’s Manor Timber stakes winner took his go to the front catch me if you can style to 9 wins from 29 starts in Ireland, Great Britain and America. Trainer Joe Davies notched his 5th consecutive win in the timber classic. A 12YO Irish bred, Vintage Vinnie took out the top rail on 14th and 16th fences and appeared to be faltering. Irish jockey Dan Nevin took his time to clear the 17th fence and jumped the remaining fences flawlessly. The ground was relatively firm but had enough bounce to be safe and forgiving with 8 of the 9 runners completing the race.
