American Anthem Latest in Baffert’s Talented Juvenile Band
By Joe Bianca

http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com...juvenile-band/

After reaching the pinnacle of Thoroughbred racing several times, including training the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years and sending out three consecutive GI Breeders’ Cup Classic victors, it’s difficult to imagine how the hunger and enthusiasm hasn’t faded some yet in Bob Baffert’s voice, but it hasn’t. Speaking from his Santa Anita base Monday, the Hall of Fame conditioner credits much of his ongoing motivation to his ever-replenishing fleet of talented 2-year-olds, the latest of which, American Anthem (Bodemeister), graduated first time out Saturday at Del Mar... Perhaps with good reason....
Three horses have exited the Mastery maiden breaker on 10/22,they haven't exactly split the wind in their next outing.
All three ran @ DMR last weekend:

The well regarded Sheer Flattery came back Saturday for Hollendorfer as the ML favorite and laid an egg, running a no threat fifth........maybe SF isn't quite as well regarded now.

Mr. Magico ran Sunday in the 3rd and checked in seventh.

Later on Sunday Popular Kid ran in the split of the earlier heat(in the 9th)..........he ran a poor seventh.

Factor in that Mastery kind of didn't look great winning the Bob Hope..........he might be a bit counterfeit.

Smith Out to Conquer the ‘World’ With Arrogate
By Joe Bianca

FULL PIECE: http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com...with-arrogate/

In May of 2005, Mike Smith piloted a gray colt by one of his beloved former mounts to a 50-1 upset in the GI Kentucky Derby. Giacomo (Holy Bull) represented the jockey’s first career win in the Run for the Roses, and it should have been the springboard to new heights of success for the New Mexico native. Instead, the Derby score was an outlier during the toughest period for Smith’s business since he left Canterbury Downs to ride on racing’s biggest stages in 1989.

“I more or less did it to myself,” Smith said of the lull in his career. “I thought, ‘well I’ll just hang out in Kentucky for a little bit,’ and thought I’d ease my way back east for a little while.”

Tropical Racing Ready for Its Moment in the Sun
By Joe Bianca

Troy Levy and Chuck Simon go way back. Both from New York, they met at Yonkers Raceway in 1988, Levy training and driving Standardbreds and Simon working as the assistant racing secretary. They mostly went their separate ways soon after that, but they always maintained a mutual love for horse racing, and their winding roads have intersected in South Florida to create Tropical Racing, a burgeoning, stratified racing partnership that both men have gone all-in on...

Curlin Filly On ‘Point’ for Weaver
http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com...nt-for-weaver/

By Joe Bianca

When Sunday’s 11th race at Gulfstream came off the turf after overnight rains, it lost a lot of its luster, as the field of lightly raced 2-year-old fillies scratched down significantly, leaving little proven dirt form. But the group was not devoid of talent, as one promising young filly showed when romping to a professional score at first asking.

Point of Honor (Curlin) was a popular item when put through the ring as hip 123 at the 2017 Keeneland September sale. After an intense round of bidding, the Siena Farms-bred chestnut topped out at $825,000. That wasn’t enough to reach her reserve, though the sum would’ve represented the second-highest lot for progeny of her sire at the marquee yearling auction had she sold.

Frank Mirahmadi Makes It Home
By Joe Bianca

There was a period when it was unclear whether Frank Mirahmadi would ever see a racetrack again. It’s a long time ago in feeling, considering where he sits now. In fact, it’s hardly two years since the veteran racecaller was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, stunning the racing world and putting an indeterminate halt to his decades-long career. Having recently been named the new announcer at iconic Santa Anita Park, precisely where he grew up falling in love with horse racing, Mirahmadi understandably struggles to explain the forces that led him from potentially near death to his fantasy job. But he made it, and his gratitude is only matched by his ability to tell the story.
