Default Who is in this picture ?

I took this photo of Jose Santos in the paddock at Belmont Park in the late 1980's or early 1990's and have always had it hanging on my wall. I really liked it, not just because I liked Jose, but because it, to me, really showed the intensity of the trainer/jockey plotting strategy before a race. I just always liked this picture and it's one of the favorite one's I've taken.

However, it's always bugged me I didn't record who the trainer was and other details.

Does anybody recognize this trainer and/or the silks ? I'm curious.

Thanks

Joe

I think Ed Sullivan was dead, however the arms do strike a note. Good observation.

It looks like Jack Ludwig.

Boy, that's a name I don't even remember. I know this wasn't a stakes race. Think this was back when Jose was riding for Scotty.

A sharp Virginia horseman. Died earlier this year.

Sorry to hear that. I'm starting to vaguely remember him now. It was a while ago. You can see that by how young Jose looks. I've always thought it was a neat picture. It makes me think.

Have great holidays and a super time-off. You deserve it !!

Joe.. If you were at BEL for JCGC Day in 1987, it may be the Vosburgh and Another Reef (Plum Bold), who was 4th to Groovy but a neck in front of Gone West.

Another Reef, a New Jersey bred by Plum Bold out of nice MSP sprinting mare Satin Dancer (Jig Time), was late to the Classic season as a 3yo in 1985 after winning the Jersey Futurity as a juvenile. He was 2nd to El Basco in the Withers before a 3rd to Leroy Jolley's Important Business in the Illinois Derby after which Ludwig freshened and shortened him up.

After prepping 10/27, Another Reef came back on 11/16 and surprised the Vosburgh at 12-1 under Nick 'The Stick' Santagata, dominating Smile (4th at 1-2) and Pancho Villa (2nd at 4-1). It was the only G1 win of Nicky's terrific career that saw him win 4,144 races and over $75,000,000.

Another Reef had a modest 1986 highlighted by a 2nd in the G2 Nassau County behind Roo Art (DWL/Shoemaker) before a 5 win season in 1987 that included trying the Vosburgh again as well as the Fall Highweight. Ludwig had many nice horses well into the 90's, but I'm guessing you were at Belmont for a stakes day and Reef Avenger fits the bill involving Santos. Will try to check on the silks as another method of identifying the circumstance. T K Leechman owned Reef Avenger.

You never cease to amaze me. I used to take my Dad up to Belmont for big days and Groovy was one of our favorites. Watching Groovy run was like doing some kind of drug, one big rush. We'd go up to the top of the stretch and just watch him fly through and you could almost hear him whistle as he went by. he was going so fast. He was a beautiful horse, all muscle, all speed. He only had one gear and that was full. That brings back wonderful memories. He had mind-numbing speed and as he crossed the finish line, every eye would go to the infield board and wait to see what time would come up. When the time went up, you could hear the crowd go "OOOOhhh..".

I bet that was the 1987 Vosburgh.

You know who I miss ? Cab Calloway. I went to Saratoga for years and one of my highlights was always seeing him. I absolutely loved that man.

I'm so glad they named a race after him.

BTW, my picture is of a lawn jockey at Santa Anita. I thought it was creepy and I asked around who painted them and I never found out.

After the Blues Brother Movie, seeing Cab was extra special every year. Gerry Cooney too, nice man. Mayor Tom Menino too at the spa.
