![]() To be fair this was the strongest European side of the last 20 years going head-to-head with the weakest US side in living memory.
Hard to pick a man of the week, but I suppose sentiment rules that Clarke, quite a rarity in sport in that he is a genuinely likeable man, must take the honour. He was 3 from 3, and I suppose the only complaint can be that he didn't quite hole the winning putt! Lee Westwood, the other wildcard, was unbeaten in his 5 matches, winning 4pts. Great picks from Woosnam. Huge performance too by Sergio Garcia, who once again flopped in the singles (albeit with Cink playing a stormer) having won all 4 of his team matches. Anyone else think he could do with an outrider in the majors! Whilst I take on board what Kev says about the guy being hyped, it must be remembered that he is only 26, and it is surely only a matter of time before a major comes his way. Although it may be that Paul Casey has overtaken him as the blue-eyed boy of European golf. Unlike Garcia, Casey's putting is fearsome. Monty may have only got 2pts from 4, but he was only beaten by the Woods/Furyk partnership, and then only by 1 hole. He remains unbeaten in Ryder Cup singles, and leads the team like a giant. As for the Americans, Mickelson once again flopped in a huge way, and there seems little point in the man taking his place in 2 years time as he simply doesn't appear interested when there's no pot of gold at the end of the tournament. Even losing 2 matches, Tiger still had his best RC in 5 attempts, which isn't saying a great deal as he has still lost 13 of 25 games. The greatest player of all time? Not at matchplay, that's for sure! I felt JJ Henry and Zach Johnson played well on debut, and are sure to be involved in future cups, but history is likely to show Vaughan Taylor and Brett Wtterich as 2 of the poorest players ever to have competed in the event.
