Default Magna 5 $1 wager

I was listening to Steve discuss the Magna 5 with Johnny D and the effects of the $1 wager on handle. I played the wager the 2nd week and did very well. I missed the wager the first week as I forgot about it and last week I was recovering from a bout of pneumonia and wasn't up to playing the races.

I've had a few horse playing friends of mine who play NY only discuss the wager with me. In addition my mother is going to play it this upcoming weekend. The reason for the interest is the $1 wager and a chance to win a nice chunk of change.

Yes I had a good feel for some of the races. The first leg was a gimme, I loved Albertus Maximus. I liked Jeronimo. The stars aligned peffectly for me. I was very lucky but was also on my game as my wager was $12.

After taxes I think it was $4600. The wG2 arrived yesterday and I filed it away as that comes into play next tax season. I'm going to sit down this weekend and calculate my tax returns.

This is nothing personal, but I hate you lol...I posted in an old(er) Magna 5 thread discussing the change from $2 base down to $1 about how I have played and never won. The closest I actually came was on a $180 or so ticket in the Sunshine Millions week this year, but I didn't have the winner in the Laurel race but went 4 for 4 after that. Before that, I had played religiously last year and failed. Maybe I'll go with a $12 ticket next time This bet just frustrates me to no end, it's like a pet peeve!

Ok, outside of my jest in the first paragraph, congrats on the cash!

I got very lucky and I made the wager because it was a dollar wager. I'm going to take a few more swings and depending on the sequence that will deterime the amount of my wager. I might put $200 into the wager or whatever I feel it takes to have the 5 winners. It's all about picking winners. If I can hit the Magna 5 again I'll be on cloud nine. Chances are that I will fall short. It's a tough wager but hopefully there is another sequence of races that I have a good feel for and can string along the winners of each race.

Good Luck with the wager. I hope you hit one.

congrats! i bet it made you feel a lot better after dealing with pneumonia.

this is my new type of betting i want to practice. i don't get many chances to bet, since i have to go to the track to do so-no online allowed here...at any rate, multi-race betting wasn't something i had attempted in the past. the most races i ever had put together was a pick three-and only one time. i had mainly focused on ex and tri wagers when at the track, which is definitely enjoyable when you hit.
but i heard steve say the other day on his show that he felt that pick fours offered the best value...so i've set a new goal for myself.

well, that was long-winded. congrats again on the hit, the first of many i hope!

So if it was a $2 base you wouldn't have played the ticket at $24?

I personally like the change to a $1 base but the handle has been $400,000 or less every weekthis year. It used to be guaranteed at $500,000. The economy and signal disputes are probably a part of that. But to say that the change is good for handle is a bit premature.

Congratulations on the score!

I don't know if I would have played it or not. I had the card and looked it over because of the $1 wager and a saw a few standouts. If it was still $2 and I studied the sequence of races as I did and came up with the same selections I probably would have played it. I think the $1 wager is good because it makes the wager manageable for the smaller player. That was a nice hit and although I've been a Weekend Warrior for quite a few years, a hit like that as a newcomer to playing it would of had me hooked.

You're probably right about it being too early to tell if the $1 is affecting overall handle. I hate to sound like a broken record but the economy is not so hot and a lot of good people are losing their jobs. I know for a fact that I'm going to lose my current job as the outfit I work for is moving the postion overseas at some point in the future. When that date is I don't know.

The F'd up thing is I caught the pneumonia after I hit. I've had a nagging cold for a few months and it finally caught up with me. Last week was hell but I feel much better now.

Multi race wagers are very tough. You could be dead on in multi legs and be off on one leg. I like the rolling doubles as a backup. It's helped my bankroll stay afloat many times. The pick 4 is great value if you beat favorites especially a heavy favorite. I've also noticed that hitting a nice priced horse ($15 or above) in leg 1 leads to decent prices.
