Default Belmont LIRR service to be shuttered?

Per DRF:

Quote:
A public hearing on the Metropolitan Transit Authority's proposal to shut down Long Island Rail Road service to Belmont Park - except on Belmont Stakes Day - will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, 333 Adams St. in Brooklyn.

Attendees may sign up to speak by calling (212) 878-7483 or sign up when they arrive at the hearing. People may also send written testimony to Douglas Sussman, MTA's director of community affairs, at 347 Madison Ave., NY, NY 10017.

Comments may also be made at www.mta.info.
This is just the latest nonsense from the unbelievably incompetent and wasteful MTA. I realize this doesn't affect the vast majority of you, but with a track as difficult to get to as Belmont if one doesn't have a car (I don't), ending this service would be pretty obnoxious. It's not as if the trains run on the hour, every hour. There are two in the morning/early afternoon and one after the races. I swear, the MTA makes the banking industry look sane and frugal.

You can take the F to the end of the line and get the N6 Bus the rest of the way ( maybe four miles ). Or you can take the E train to the end, Jamaica, and get the 110 bus, but that takes a bit longer.

We have had some great support from the area around Belmont and are hopeful the LIRR service will continue.

Since it's such a trip for me, I generally don't go out to Belmont unless I'm staying all day. If I have to leave early though, I hoof it the 15 blocks or so to Queens Village and take the LIRR from there.

The train would still run on Belmont day. It would be the Belmont regulars that are screwed.
