McPeek makes most of allowances
By Marty McGee

http://www.drf.com/news/article/100890.html

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - An Argentine restaurant named Las Brisas caters to a racetrack crowd on the oceanside boardwalk in nearby Hollywood, the most overt sign being the terrific memorabilia on the walls. Ken McPeek has taken notice of a photo from Gulfstream Park in 1999 that shows Lemon Drop Kid winning what appeared to be an everyday allowance race on a January afternoon.

Almost a decade has passed since Lemon Drop Kid used that race toward a campaign that included victories in the Belmont and Travers stakes for the late Scotty Schulhofer, and McPeek is one trainer keenly aware that when it comes to 3-year-olds, every single step is a critical one.

I thought the #2 was very impressive in his debut and if he really does go off as the third choice - like he is on the ML - I think he could be worth a wager.

1/5 odds say that the winner of this race or a horse that's a late running second will generate a lot of early hype but will be nowhere near the winners circle come any important races for 3yo's this year, with the possible exception of the Belmont Stakes.

It's that time of year. Every win in even psuedo-impressive fashion by a 3YO at any level generates hype. We've a long a way to go.

It always seems to generate more hype when it's a 9f maiden or allowance winner at Gulfstream because people start thinking that if they can go that far early, 10f will be right up their alley, especially for a late closing runner. It just seems to me though, that the majority of winners and closers of these types of races are slow grinders that can put out a series of 24-25 second quarters or one-run horses with no speed. There's the occassional exception but for the most part, you don't get the kinds of horses that have that sort of push button acceleration that you like to see in really good horses.

Default Danger to Society

Since we haven't had a 'This is my Derby horse' thread yet, I figured I would be the guy to start one. This horse Danger to Society really was impressive today IMO. He is out of Harlan's Holiday out of a Deputy Minister mare, who produced Silver Charm. I am assuming that he wasn't 100% cranked and still beat some horses that are being considered to be very talented. He is my official Derby horse for 2009.

Looking forward to seeing him run in the upcoming stakes at Gulfstream.

Whew. I thought this was a thread about your after-track activities

1) I need to correct myself and say that Danger to Society's dam is a half to Silver Charm

2) Idol Maker once he gets gelded will be good, and They're Late has some talent. Probably shouldn't have used 'very' though...

Owned in part by our old buddy LBigDog77. He doesn't come around here anymore, but good to see him with a nice three-year-old after First Samurai's issues.

I think Free Country has more upside. Both ran basically the identical time today for 9f.

Had him on ATR Tuesday. Don't forget the Southern Hemisphere 4yo he and McPeek'd brought back Saturday at GP... National Kid. They're going after the UAE Derby with him.
