![]() Sorry if this has already been discussed...I couldn't find a thread on it.
There were 10 owners who paid the $6000 to get their horses nominated to the Triple Crown. The rational for some of these is a mystery to me: from "Bloodstock Journal" Godolphin Racing's BARRIER REEF (Mizzen Mast), trained by Saeed bin Suroor, who was last seen capturing the February 2 Whirlaway S. at Aqueduct; John T.L. Jones' BIG GLEN (Cactus Ridge), a Frank Brothers trainee who most recently landed the March 22 Rushaway S. at Turfway Park; Fox Hill Farm's filly EIGHT BELLES (Unbridled's Song), who won the March 16 Honeybee S. (G3) at Oaklawn Park for horseman Larry Jones; Bernard and Bea Oxenberg's HEY BYRN (Put It Back), conditioned by Eddie Plesa Jr. and fourth in Saturday's Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park; Russata Stable's JAZZ IN THE PARK (Ecton Park), who is coming off a sharp Fair Grounds allowance score on March 14 for horseman Bobby Barnett; Super Horse Inc.'s KINSALE KING (Yankee Victor), a Jesse Mendoza pupil who broke his maiden at Santa Anita on March 16; B. Wayne Hughes' MY PAL CHARLIE (Indian Charlie), trained by Albert Stall Jr. and a solid runner-up in the March 8 Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds; Brereton Jones' filly PROUD SPELL (Proud Citizen), a stablemate of Eight Belles from the Larry Jones barn, who is exiting a victory in the March 8 Fair Grounds Oaks (G2); Charlotte Wrather's ROSSO CORSA (Ferrari [Ger]), who landed a March 7 maiden at Santa Anita for conditioner Darrell Vienna; and Peachtree Stable's SPURRIER (Dixieland Band), a Todd Pletcher pupil who is coming off an allowance/optional claiming victory at Aqueduct on March 5. Did Hey Byrn run a good enough race to shell out $6K? And how about the two maiden winners? --Dunbar

![]() Barrier Reef is entered in the G3 Central Bank Transylvania Stakes on Friday at Keeneland vs. Prussian. Looks like he won't be going to the Derby.

![]() Also, keep in mind these aren't just Derby nominations, they are for the whole Triple Crown so just cause a horse isn't pointing at the Derby doesn't mean it makes no sense to nominate.

![]() I don't get this. My DerbyWatch email from DRF says:
"* Recapture the Glory was announced as another late nominee to the Triple Crown by Triple Crown Productions, bringing the total of late nominees to 11 and the overall number of nominees to 460, which equals the overall record set last year. There has been a common nomination form for the Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes since 1986." How does this come out 5 days after the supposed cutoff?! --Dunbar

![]() Sheikh Mohammed found $6000 under his couch cushion so he decided to nominate Barrier Reef.
This horse is my pick for the derby if he can get in but looks like connections are not forcing it by putting him in a turf race in bis next start |

![]() The modest level of some of the late nominees speaks to what a mess this year's bunch is. As mentioned this is a nomination to all three races, not just the Derby. Some may be looking ahead to the Preakness or Belmont.
The late report of Recapture the Glory's nomination may just be an oversight. His name may not have been on the press release from last wek, by accident. I doubt that he was nominated after the cutoff.
