![]() "Rags to Riches, Street Sense, and Curlin headed an outstanding 3-year-old crop that rivaled the celebrated class of 1957, which included Bold Ruler, Gallant Man, Iron Leige, and Round Table, and 1973, which included Secretariat, Sham, Forego, and Desert Vixen."
Beyond the wild laughability of this quote... I really love how he goes about ordering them. Yes, in order, you have.... * A filly with a massive endurance pedigree and a career top Beyer of 107. * A colt with a career top Beyer of 111 - who gave clear ground away to that stretch running sensation Hard Spun through the lane in his final two career races. And - was off the bridal so badly in the late stages of the Derby, that Hard Spun actually caught the back of his heels, stumbled, and still recovered and made small ground through deep stretch. * Why not put far and away the most dominant horse of this 3yo crop third? Since he feels the need to toss Rags to Riches in with the 3yo male crop - than I guess you can toss the brillaint crop of fillies that included Inside Information, Heavenly Prize, Lakeway, Sardula, and Mariah's Storm in with their male counterparts led by Holy Bull...and don't forget that 3yo's swept the trifecta in that years Breeders Cup Classic even without their star Holy Bull running...and Tikkanen also won the Breeders Cup Turf at 3. The 2000 crop of 3yo's featured a clean sweep of the superfecta in the Breeders Cup Classic from Tiznow, Giant's Causeway, Captain Steve, and Albert the Great. War Chant also took the BC Mile at 3 for that crop. Not to mention horses like Fusaichi Pegasus, Red Bullet, Aptitude, and Unshaded. Spain and Surfside made a cold exacta as 3yo's in the Distaff for that crop, and Surfside came right back to win the Clark with a 116 Beyer next out. This was surprising because Privman's actually one of the better ones - to read something like that wasn't easy. I'm surprised he didn't heap praise on the Malibu Stakes. This 3yo male crop had one potentially great horse - he's certainly a great talent anyway. There is a big drop off after him. |
