Question Can this be right?

In the last leg of tomorrow's Magna "5" the 5th race @ SA, the #3 horse;
Dancin' Sami made her debut in a quarter horse race at Los Alamitos going 870 yards?
Can thoroughbreds race in quarter horse race?
Never saw that before.

Very popular pitting long winded QHorses against super fast T-breds at this distance. I think the QH are at a disadvantage as they have to make a turn on all the tracks I have seen this race take place. This is really a long way for most QHorses.

Anyone remember the Griswold (It's been a long time....but his name was something like that???) vs. Valiant Pete match races? Anyways Griswold was a world champion quarter horse and Valiant Pete was one of the better California sprinters (again it was such a long time ago that I might be forgetting something). They had a match race at 4 furlongs which I think Valiant Pete won. That's the only case I remember of quarter horse versus thoroughbred.

Actually, I believe some (many?, most?) quarter horses have thoroughbred blood in their breeding. Of course the reverse isn't true due to the strict breeding rules with thoroughbreds (no AI, no crossbreed etc.)

When I was first learning to handicap at Bandera Downs, QH and TB raced each other all the time at 870 and 1000 yards. What was interesting was the DRF at that time would not put those races in the TB past performances. I remember hitting a TB whose past perfromances said he was coming off a 18 month layoff but I knew he had hit th board several times against the QHs.

Actaully, the TB are at a disadvantage. TB rarely can break with QH and usually are 3-4 lengths back at the first call.

I think you're right. A couple of years ago, there was a QH named Prankster CF, who was a hell of a horse. I think his connections threw out a challenge to Lost In The Fog's (I think it was LITF) connections as to a match race. I don't think anything would have come of it, but it became moot, because Prankster had to be put down on the track in his last race. I think Prankster was by Clever Trick or maybe out of a CT daughter.

OMG Mr. Witch...

You visited Bandera Downs????????? So did I.
Retama Park is where I witnessed most of these races. And I think the QH were at a disadvantage in the races I kept track of.
