Yup. I'm looking forward to the canned statement that comes out of that household where, undoubtedly, they're getting their stories straight at this very moment. Still time to formulate more jokes--any involving the word "driver" have apparently been done, I think the next should involve Tiger's distraction+wreck happening because his wife forgot to yell "fore!" before she nailed his back window with the club. Just a thought.

I'm glad SB's injury isn't as bad as we thought, and I hope he's still on target for a 4yo campaign, in part because he's a nice horse, but also because I like good things happening for Tim Ice. Fingers crossed. SB still gets a chance to try to be the best horse Kent Desormeaux rode!

The one that was reported and required screws? Technically it is a chip fracture, but seldom separate in the joint.

Nobody wins here, just a bad reporting job. Maybe they can do better with following Tiger Woods.

It appears to be displaced, as the connections are reporting possible removal of what looks like a small pea.

An update has been posted at Paulick Report.

http://www.paulickreport.com/blog/su...-return-to-us/

For those critical of the reporting on this, please understand that there is a language barrier on several levels that created some confusion.

Tim Ice was led to believe by the Japan Racing Association's translator on the scene that it was a small chip, which is the information he conveyed to his owners, who were not at Hanshin. When a couple of other writers spoke with owner Dr. K.K. Jayaraman, he relayed the information he was given at the time, which wasn't quite accurate.

When Tim saw the X rays himself (they were the old fashioned style, not digital, so it took a little time for him to get a look at them), he realized that it was a vertical fracture--not displaced or comminuted--but more of a hairline fracture. That's what I reported. It will require surgery and a screw to help mend the bone, but he said the vet in the U.S. who also had a chance to look at the X rays said the surgery would be quite simple and the prognosis good.

The other writers did nothing wrong and I don't think it's fair to say it's National Enquirer style reporting or journalism in the age of Twitter--as a couple of you did. Anyone who worked on this story was only trying to get the news out to their readers, and I don't think anyone took any shortcuts. The language barrier can be a real problem in Japan, and this was a good example.

There's a lot you can criticize us for, but I don't think this is one of those occasions.

How is it not fair? You wanted to be the first to report the news and you did. Congrats. Look, I feel bad for Summer Bird and Tim Ice, but maybe the world could have survived without the news until the facts were more accurate. The "language barrier" is a lame excuse. Tweet on, and welcome to the board.

I agree herkoff.

Personally, I don't believe anything until the avatars change.

Should we go after that Pincay radio tribute next?

I'm not sure what you are saying was inaccurate in the original post at Paulick Report. Summer Bird was injured, it was a fracture to his right foreleg, and not lilfe threatening. But please feel free to have the last word.

Default Summer Bird needs surgery for fracture

Summer Bird needs surgery for fracture

Quote:
Summer Bird, who has been declared from the Japan Cup Dirt on Dec. 6 because of injury, is scheduled to leave Japan on Thursday for Los Angeles, where he could undergo surgery for a nondisplaced hairline fracture in his right front cannon bone, said his co-owner, K.K. Jayaraman.

"I think the prognosis for racing is good for him," he said.

Summer Bird, who was injured following a workout Sunday at Hanshin Racecourse near Osaka, was first believed to have sustained a small bone chip in his right front ankle. But Jayaraman said that the Japanese veterinarian who X-rayed the horse did not speak English and the true diagnosis was lost in translation. It was when the X-rays were reviewed by Jayaraman, who is a cardiologist, and Tim Ice, who trains Summer Bird, that the fracture was confirmed.

"It's almost like someone made a little scratch on the glass when you look on the X-ray," said Jayaraman.

He said the fracture is located in the lower portion of the cannon bone. X-rays have been sent to a Colorado veterinarian that Jayaraman has used with success in the past. Jayaraman thought a screw may need to be placed in the fracture line to enhance the healing process, and he felt the surgery could be done in either Los Angeles or Colorado. However, he added that such decisions are to be made when Summer Bird gets back to North America.

Jayaraman said Summer Bird is comfortable, and he is hopeful he will return to the races in 2010.

"The main thing is to get him back home," he said.
I hope his surgery is successful. I'd like to see him run next year.

Head to Lexington around August you will see him in a Paddock running around for a few hours a day. There is zero chance he runs again..

Speightstown? His horses seem to have distance limitations...and they improve on turf.

I guess he has a home as long as the BC Turf Sprint is around.
