Lit de Justice was North America's champion sprinter in 1996.

Eclipse Award winner Lit de Justice died July 20 from the infirmities of old age at Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center near Los Olivos, Calif. The 22-year-old pensioned stallion resided at Richard and Gaby Sulpizio's Magali Farms near Santa Ynez, Calif.

Kentucky-bred Lit de Justice, who began his racing career in France and was group-placed in that country, was North America's champion sprinter in 1996 for C.N. and Carol Ray's Evergreen Farms. Trained by Jenine Sahadi, Lit de Justice equaled the track-record of 1:08.60 in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) at Woodbine a year after finishing third in the race at Belmont Park. Lit de Justice also captured the 1996 Bing Crosby Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) and the Palos Verdes Handicap (gr. III), plus the El Conejo Handicap in track-record time.

Lit de Justice, by El Gran Senor, was retired following his Breeders' Cup score with a record of 10-8-6 from 36 starts and earnings of $1,397,649. He entered stud at Frank Stronach's Adena Springs in Kentucky and stood there until he was relocated to Magali in 2002.

"Lit de Justice was perfect to bring in as the farm's first stallion," said Tom Hudson, Magali farm manager. "He was a great racehorse. Not only did he win the Breeders' Cup, but he set track records in California. This coupled with his pedigree, conformation, and heart made him a great opportunity for California breeders and helped to establish the farm."

Lit de Justice has sired 22 stakes winners and the earners of more than $21.2 million. He is represented by 254 winners from 324 starters and average earnings per starter of $65,537. His runners include graded winners Hour of Justice and Injustice.

Bred by Swettenham Stud, Lit de Justice is out of French group III winner Kanmary (by Kenmare) and is a half brother to three English stakes winners including group I winner Commander Collins and group II winner City Leader.

Lit de Justice is buried at Magali.

Zafarana, as per her trainer Roger Varian.

I guess she collapsed and died during the race won by her stablemate today at Newbury.

She was 4 and had one win from 8 starts.
