Reading some viewer comments on Yahoo. Most people hated it becuase they could not understand the horse racing jargon, felt the actors were mumbling and it was a topic unrelatable.

Milch was on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson the other day. They showed a clip that was almost entirely jargon. Very little in the way of normal vocabulary. There's gotta be a sense of context or characters (I don't mean watching gamblers mid-gamble). Show Nolte or Hoffman who have other things going on and are, frankly, more famous draws. Hit newbies with the other stuff when they watch the show. I remember thinking that if I weren't already a fan of the sport, that clip would turn me off of trying to start watching Luck. It's dry when you just read out a string of wagers. It makes it sound like you're reading a math equation. Really bad idea to show it and expect anyone to go 'sign me up for that.' I really thought it was a missed opportunity.

Yeah it was just a bad attempt at entertainment. Just because people have immense talent doesn't mean they can make good art every single time. This show seemed desperate from the start. It's understandable considering how awful the last few projects from Mann have been.

Sounds like they should have done some of those "webisodes" a la True Blood to explain some of the lingo.

OK, this a wager I will be happy to make.

Those HBO c**ksuckers killed Deadwood on a cost versus ratings basis, and that show was much, much better (and far more acclaimed) than Luck (which I liked but had no illusions about).

Luck is gone, and no other network is going to revive it. Who the hell would want that heat for those ratings?

exactly. they wouldn't have cancelled had the show been doing well.

I can't blame a network for canceling a show that isn't making it money, but I can blame them for using the death of a horse that wasn't even on set as the excuse. What are the odds it comes up during the Kentucky Derby broadcast? Le sigh.

Poor guy …he can't catch a break… I feel his pain… not only do they slaughter delphi for the insurance money but now they ruin the only derby chances he'll ever have…. he's probably sitting in front of the stable now saying "they killed the show.'

We all know why they really cancelled the show- bad ratings. But we haven't heard much about the first two breakdowns. The last one occurred when they were walking the horse back to the stall, as reported. But we never heard the details of the first two. In the first episode there was a catastrophic breakdown in the very first race, I believe(it didn't take the show long to show that part of horse racing) Was this the horse that had to be euthanized? Did something go wrong with a stunt they were doing?

They should be able to perform these stunts safely. A horse can fall and get back up safely. Heck, back in the day in these steeplechase races, the WINNER of the race typically fell three or four times.

Apologies if this has been posted before- this TV Guide article mentions that Stronach may have wanted to stop allowing the show to have Santa Anita as its location:

I have called HBO at the above number and expressed my extreme dissapointment at their broken promise not to renew Luck. http://www.theatlantic.com/entertain...s-luck/254539/
" The cancellation of the series... is a devastating blow to horse racing."

I think The Stark's have an edge over the Lanister's because they have a bastard son guarding the wall... and he knows the ins and outs of The White Riders.

The Lanister dwarf will be around till the last dog dies. He's a great charchter.

The blonde haired dragon lady is going to be an absolute menace.

The series got me to read the books- I really liked the first three, but the second two are a little long without a lot happening (in my opinion, anyway). There's a lot more background in the books, which I found made the show even better on a second viewing.

I hope you're right about Tyrion- he's one of my favorite characters, too. I'm glad to see the actress who played Anne Boleyn in The Tudors showing up in Season Two. I thought The Tudors was a crap show, when all was said and done, but the first two seasons, when she was in it, were fun.

The Eunuch reminds me of Riot and King Joffrey reminds me of Obama.
