![]() It's all about craftsmanship. We have plenty of planes active in the US that were built in the 70's and 80's. Boeing and M-D and the other American aviation companies just did things better than YAK.
Anyway, sad to see Ruslan Salei and Brad McCrimmon as well as Pavol Demitra appear to be among the dead. Very sad story.

![]() aeroflot retired all it's soviet era tupolev's in 2009. they're still flown by smaller regional carriers and in some former soviet republic's.
no russia based airline can fly them beginning next year. the newer tupolev's are supposed to be a lot more reliable. if you travel to that part of the world i'd be careful to make sure any plane you fly in is less than 20 years old. |

![]() The plane that crashed apparently went into service in 1993.
Like I said, lots of planes in service for American airlines are 20-30 years old; I'd think our standard of maintenance is just considerably higher.
