My buddy's Bahamian in-laws have called from their satellite phone and are okay. House has roof damage, the fishing boat (their income source) survived, but they say Irene caused more damage to the islands than their last big direct hit, Andrew.
They are being told the power will be back on within a week (it was shut off as a precaution midnight Wedneseday/Thursday), but phone/cell phone could be well over a month. The four legged cell tower on the next island over was snapped in half.
I hope everybody in Irene's path on the east coast can stay safe this weekend.
