I agree with this when focusing only on the religious right (which I think is just a very very minor part of religion).


but as far as organized religion in general... I think it has more to do with not wanting to deal with your own mortality than it does wanting to tell others how to live. People dont want to die and be done, with heaven, you get a different option. It's comforting.
