The Revolution and the Media
Does anyone think that the Revolutionary War would have taken place if there was the kind of media coverage (dirt digging) that exists today?

one thing i have found in all my history studies is just how vicious things were then...when people say we need to return to how politics used to be, i laugh. we don't fight duels or cane people anymore. the media is far kinder than it was, and so are the political cartoons.
the only real difference between now and then regarding the media is the speed of info, not the content. for instance, how different would our history be had the battle of new orleans not been fought? the war was already over, a treaty signed-but no one on the continent knew it. the news of jacksons victory over superior numbers in new orleans spread to new york and elsewhere before the treaty. jackson was a war hero, and subsequent winner in the presidential election. everyone thought england signed a treaty because of the battle. once the truth was known, it didn't matter.... |

I'm more interested in what JFK's Twitter account would have looked like! He probably would have made Weiner look like Ward Cleaver.

Jefferson bangs his slaves and likes to drink WINE!!" Oh well then he couldn't possibly have any good ideas.
Washington treats people like he is SOO important. Who do these people think they are??? Etc. No shot the people would have followed the Forefathers back then, they would have been vilified in the media.

'Zig makes a good point about the political cartoons, they were brutal!
Maybe we should go back to duels. We'll use rubber bullets so nothing is terminal, but I would love to see Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell facing off at 50 feet apart in front of the Capital.

by the way....the other founding fathers new about jeffersons 'dashing sally' and that ben franklin had a bastard child. things were just different then.
alexander hamilton had his share of enemies, a few accused him of mishandling of money when he was sectreas. he admitted to an adulterous affair, and the he'd been blackmailed by the other womans husband-but he was cleared of any financial wrong-doing. |
