If he's healthy he goes. If not they've got Stay Thirsty. How many 2nd stringers ended up winning the derby? A few.

Sometimes second stringers even win the Triple Crown. I don't think they considered Sir Barton to be a bum, he just wasn't supposed to wire the Derby field. They entered him as a rabbit, but nobody bothered to tell the horse.

As long as he is healthy, I would be shocked if he isn't in the gate in Churchill. If he loses then, you could always make him a miler (where he could still end up being a very special horse). But if you miss that first Saturday in May, there's no going back.
