If you want a great sandwich get a Muffaletta sandwich at Central Grocery on Decatur Street in the quarter or a po-boy at Mothers on Poydras street.

If I get down there, I am eating there. The food looks like it would make a bulldog break its chain.

Once you eat real cajun/creole cooking there, everything being called that elsewhere becomes only a pale imitation.

Take a stroll around the beautiful neighborhood that surrounds the track. The people are so friendly and kind.

You will be safe in the Esplanade area outside the Mystery Street entrance. There is a good French bistro nearby on Esplanade named Cafe Degas. A good po-boy place fairly close to Fair Grounds is Parkway Bakery. Of course, you won't need to go there after getting a corned beef at the track. If you are interested in some Italian desserts, try Angelo Brocato's on Carrollton.

New Orleans is a great restaurant town. FWIW, my favorite is Brigtsen's. Award winning chef and owner Frank Brigtsen is a big racing fan.
