It's a completely irrelevant stat in the current era. Just like when people said Funny Cide couldn't win the Derby- "geldings hadn't won since 1929 and a New York bred had never won". For many years, the NY breeding program wasn't very good. The horses were by crappy backyard sires out of cheap mares- and weren't generally competitive on track with KY breds or even PA breds. But now, as the breeding landscape has changed, more and more NY breds are by top sires out of graded stakes mares.

I would bet even money or less that a NY bred wins a BC race in the next 3 years.
