Here is what I would do if I were you. Try to find a place where there is some grass where you could run a couple of hundred yards totally barefoot as an experiment to see if you like it. You obviously need to be very careful and make sure there are no rocks or glass.

If you like running barefoot and notice a big difference, then you can make the 100 mile drive and get the shoes.
