What parent lets a child and she is one except in places where its ok to marry a 12 year old let either child go on a boat alone around the world . WTF ? Its one thing raising a child to be confident and brave and smart and it is a totally other thing to just feed them to the elements. Would anybody let their child hike to the South Pole alone?

attention whore 11948 up, 608 down

Label given to any person who craves attention to such an extent that they will do anything to receive it. The type of attention (negative or positive) does not matter.

You're wrong. Just shut the f.uck up.

Obviously, their attitude is that if God wants her back, then they'll make more.

16 year old kids can barely drive a car, and these parents allow their daughter to sail, alone, around the world. brilliant.

And it's found she's safe. Good news. Ship keel broken and demasted. She has heat and two weeks food, she'll be picked up.

I'm surprised so many here think age is the primary determinant of learned ability, skill and experience. Where was the outrage for Samantha Larson and Jessica Watson? Or 10-year-olds riding ATV's or using power lawn mowers?

Uhm because its the very vast ocean and no one is close by or maybe that its just stupid. Would you let your child hike to the South Pole by themselves?

Danger is relative to skill, ability, preparation, mental maturity. Another teenager just solo sailed the world a couple weeks ago. A teenager just climbed Everest.

and neither could sign a contract, lease, medical release etc. etc. But then again I saw a 3yr old smoking and a 6yr old drinking recently so I may be a bit old fashioned.

The kid who climbed Everest wasnt alone and for the other parents who let their kid sail solo they are idiots too . You know I grew up on a farm and learned how to drive a tractor when I was 8 but I didnt do it alone , I learned how to ride a horse when I was 5 but I didnt do that alone either . I could run a drill press a lathe and form press when I was 12 but I didnt do that alone either. If their daughter would have died would you still think it was a great idea ? Usually I dont call people names on here but the masses are right , you are a nimrod.

When they wander 3000 kilometers from home you might have a point. Nevermind being in the ocean.

i think any parent who allows a sixteen year old to travel around the world alone, regardless of means of transportation, is a nut. and other sailors have said there is no way she gained enough experience at her age to handle any and every disaster that could befall her at sea. i don't get the need to tackle something like that at that age. and no, ten year olds shouldn't be driving atv's. now, she may be a dammed precocious 16 year old, good for her. still disagree with them letting her make the attempt.

there is tons of outrage against that, if you are a responsible person. ATV's kill so many kids under 18. I didnt have any outrage for Larson or Watson cause I've never heard of them until this issue. You really think its responsible to let a 16 year old sail around the world... and go into Southern Hemi waters where the most accomplished sailors have said that only an idiot sails through the southern hemi in the winter?

i've raised three kids who seem bright and intelligent enough. but i still cringed when two took a road trip to connecticut and back. can't imagine them going round the world like that--alone! that's the main thing...all alone in that huge expanse of water. that vastness would be enough to bring a seasoned sailor to their wits end. hell, i raised my kids with a lot of knowledge of history, including llewelyn the great who went to recapture his welsh lands at the age of thirteen-but even he had help.
