He lost his biggest owner, Gene Klein. With Klein's money, Lukas was able to compete with foreign buyers at the Keeneland and Saratoga yearling sales. That is not to say that Lukas lacked other owners with deep pockets. He trained for Overbrook, Sanan, Lewis, Tabor, and Thoroughbred Corp, among others, over the years. But those owners tended to spread their horses among several trainers.
