I would bet that the average scores of the general student population of ND is higher than big state schools. While they may not be as stringent academically as they try to pretend they are, ND doesnt seem recruit the really questionable guys like most other big schools.

And as long as NBC wants them they arent any different than the Pac 10, Big 10 or SEC who keep blocking a playoff because they dont want to share the money they currently monopolize.

Seriously, they are frauds when it comes to their claims that academics get in the way of athletics. What does that say about Stanford (ranked 4th in US News National Universities ranking), Duke (10th), Northwestern (12th), Vanderbilt (17th), UC Berkeley (21st), UCLA (24th), UVA (24th), USC (26th), Michigan (27th), UNC (28th), Wake Forest (28th), Boston College (34th), or Penn State, Florida, and Texas (tied for 47th)? Are they all doing terribly because they have semi-difficult entrance requirements, or does all it take is 3rd grade literacy and a phony GED to get in? While I'm sure there's a few questionable guys on all of these school's teams, the majority have quality kids. While a good kid and decent academically, Golden Tate ain't exactly Einstein- he had a 3.1 GPA and 26 ACT, respectable but not exactly up to par of what is "suggested" for the 50th percentile as entrance to ND (3.7 GPA 32 ACT).

They have struggled because the BCS football landscape has rendered them useless. Until they join the Big East as a full member, or Big Ten, their independent status will rank them as the "token white guy" trying to get in the club.

College football players shouldnt have to get the same scores that a regular student gets, they have a special skill set and lets not forget the amount of money made on their backs. That being said i truly believe that they have higher standards than most of the schools listed with the exception of Stanford, Duke, NW and Vandy. ND rarely has issues with player behavior and off the field issues that other schools regularly have regardless of the coach.

I really think you are missing the boat on ND's success or lackthereof. It really has nothing to do with the BCS or no conference affiliation.


It is simply they havent had a good coach since Lou Holtz. Nobody wins without a good coach in high level college football. They arent getting ultra successful guys who thrive post-ND. They have simply made bad hires. If they had gotten Meyer, they would have been a top 10 team every year. With Weis, FL would be 8-4.

It is simply they havent had a good coach since Lou Holtz. Nobody wins without a good coach in high level college football. They arent getting ultra successful guys who thrive post-ND. while they were firing the coach, they should have gone ahead and fired the AD as well. several bad coaching hires now-it's not just the coaches.

I don't think that's entirely the problem with them, but it just bothers me significantly that they scorn the conference they are affiliated with because they claim to be "too good" where in fact they would have struggled to finish better than 7th this year and last.

Every other school given their own deal with TV and the BCS would scorn their conference too. Why share the loot when you can get it all? If they hire a good coach, they will be back. if they hire another mediocre type, they wont.
