here's the math:
#combinations for win= 4
# remaining cominations for place=6-1=5
# for show = 7-2=5

where most people lose track is in reducing the number as you go along. Because you use the same four again in the place spot, one of those would obviously have to win for the ticket to be alive. Can't win and place, so that only leaves five numbers in the second spot..hope this helps. It's not easy to explain it, though once you get the concept, it's 3rd grade level math to figure.
