The federal money isn't a problem. New York has had a policy that we serve every customer who comes through our doors at the One Stop Centers around the state. Then the customers with the most need are given advanced training services with the normal money we get from the feds for the WIA program. All that the additional stimulus money is being used for is to be able to offer training for a much larger percentage of the customer base and to fund a summer youth employment program. Once the stimulus money is gone we will revert to how it was before. For the stimulus money provided for UI, the state just extended unemployment benefits to 72 weeks. Once the stimulus money is gone the number of benefit weeks will be reduced. So no problem once that money is gone. Contrary to popular belief the states can't simply take the stimulus money and use it to fund existing programs in place of normal funds. It has to be used for an expansion of service which will simply be contracted when the stimulus money runs out. |
