The reason this ISN"T confusing, as is the case for those horses that lack room but don't run when they get clear, is that there are cases where horses actually run inside. In fact, the winner of the race under discussion had no problem running inside. There's what trainers believe and then there's what the replays reveal.

Moreover, if you look at race charts over an extended period of time and identify patterns or types, in general or specific to a track, you'll notice that most of the IMPRESSIVE RUNS are by horses that saved ground -- that did LESS running than the others.

But let's look at this a little bit closer. Is it really the horses that don't want to run inside/between or is it the jocks? Obviously a jock can't put a horse into a strong drive when it is behind horses. Under those circumstances, going OUTSIDE is optimum. When there are no other horses ahead of a given horse, inside or out is essentially the same.

Horses like to RALLY outside horses. Comparing this to a horse riding the rail while on the lead doesn't make sense. When you add in Monday's strong rail, and the lack of ability by the second finisher, you create a recipe for the winner hanging on.

The most preferable trip is saving ground on the turn and angling outside into the clear in the stretch when you are coming from behind....unless you are dealing with a horse that is an effective rail runner. These horses may not be rare but they aren't the norm.

Maragh had a chance to take the inside before they hit the turn. This is what I was referring to; not that he should've passed on the inside in the lane.

The winner and at least one other horse that won on the inside/front end Monday struggled to change leads and upon doing so experienced a 'resurgence' of sorts. While the rail was certainly the place to be, it might not've been as good as some would think.

When you consider the fact that the winner had 'wiped out' the field last out, as had the Toscano claim the day before, you also get an idea of why they both 'hung on'.
