Whyte counting his lucky stars ALAN AITKEN But Whyte was thankful even to be at the meeting having gone within a heartbeat of wrecking his right knee on Friday. "My horse Syllabus had my knee pinned against the side of the gate and then went up in the air, and I went over into the next stall where there was no horse to get any leverage but my knee was still pinned and supporting my entire weight for a split second," Whyte said. "If the horse hadn't moved when he did, I would have torn the ligaments in my knee. As it was there was a crunching sound and some pain but he had just moved in time to free the leg. I tell you, somebody was looking after me." * * * I thought this was kinda fun... Excerpt, SCMP... Apache Cat's HK trip abandoned after Flemington failure MURRAY BELL There was an unusual Hong Kong connection with All Silent, who completed his rise up the ratings with a dominant win in the Group One Emirates Stakes (1,600m), the highlight race of the final day of the carnival. All Silent began his career in Hong Kong under the name Chiu Chan Elite. He was owned by Robin Chan Yau-hing and trained by John Size. To say the Belong To Me gelding failed to make an impression is a gross understatement. In three barrier trials for Size, he was last and distanced on the first two occasions and, when revved right up by Anthony Delpech for a third trial, he laboured into fifth spot in a turf trial over 1,000m, beaten 8.2 lengths. At that time, Chan had the option of bringing in Warrior, so Chiu Chan Elite was replaced by the brilliant young sprinter and it all looked like ending well when Warrior won his first three starts. Chiu Chan Elite was "retired" from Hong Kong unraced, returning to Australia and reverting to the name All Silent. Chan did not want to continue in the ownership of All Silent, and he was bought back by his yearling selector, Size's father-in-law Neville Begg, who now races the gelding with other family members. The five-year-old is trained by Begg's son Grahame. |
