Graduated tax rates ARE what put people on equal opportunity- Obama isn't passing on money from the rich to the poor, like so many people make it sound like. You still have to EARN to benefit, it isn't a HANDOUT (Bush actually tried a handout this year, remember? It didn't work, and I thought it was a good idea at the time.) It's simple economics. The value of $1 to someone making $40k is much higher than someone making $400k. To put it in racing parlance, the reason takeout is higher on trifectas than win bets because the 'bite' of an incremental dollar in tax is lessened. RE: military... my opinion is we spend too much money on defense in this country. We are spending $12.3 BILLION a month in Iraq/Afghanistan right now. No offense to those that have honorably served our country in legitimate wartime, like World War II or Korea or even Vietnam, but in nonviolent times, the military is a good place for kids to go out of high school who aren't (a) bright/motivated enough for college or (b) skilled enough at a trade. why not spend those same dollars on alternative schools which could mold kids into potentially lucrative careers? Obama has flip flopped a lot on this, as have many people and politicians, I agree. It's definitely something I'm watching closely for when he's up for re-election in 4 years. |

Being a private at Fort Drum like my dumbass buddies were and being in flight school at Annapolis or working on nukes are two VERY different things. The Naval Academy is one of the hardest schools in the country to get into for a reason. |

![]() I am upset not at the discussion of cutting military spending, but at remarks made about high school kids who join up...and they way you say them before there is crtiticism is the way you mean them.
I get the feeling (It takes a long time ,I know) that too many people on here have a superiority complex. Why..I'm not sure. But I don't really feel superior to anyone. I don't feel superior to a homeless person. Why should I? There may be the smartest of all. So if you see me a while longer it's only because I am checking a couple final pm's. Otherwise I'm through ....use me to feel better about yourselves. |

In fact I feel pretty low right now for making it sound like I'm putting down honorable people. I think it's time I retired from the Political section as clearly I don't know what the fuc|< I'm talking about. ![]() |

Great job. Really....calling them bottom of the pile. A lot of times in school smart kids fly under the radar because of problems you don't know about. Sometimes the "real" smart kids are the problem. You and The Philski have greatly disappointed me. |

why he chose the navy-he wanted in their nuke program. also, my husband (his father of course) is an electrician, a skill he learned in the navy and has put to great use. mark was interested in that field, so he joined to be a nuclear electrician. he could go and work at any nuclear power plant in the country now. but he likes the navy (which by the way took a raw teen kid and has turned him into a man, maturation is a bonus) and has decided to make it a career. he considered the naval academy, but like his father, wants to be hands-on, not management-which is basically what the officers corps is. he said if he chose college, he may go for electrical engineering, but since he's re-signing and wants to make it a career, i don't see it happening-unless he goes when he retires at age 38! eric on the other hand wants to parlay becoming a pilot into being an astronaut--not easily done if you don't go into the navy or air force.
