Maybe it goes back to the thought of 'nobody wins in a dead heat' since the owners split the winners share and lose the maiden condition, in the case of the 2nd race.

I have seen races not as close as these 2 called heater alot.
The Indiana Derby 2-3 years ago comes to mind, as one that wasnt that close that was a called a dead heat.
I occasionally go with a crew of co-workers to the local OTB for lunch. None of them are regular race fans, so everyone chips in $20 and I make the selections. I do my handicapping the night before, subject to the normal late adjustments, but it's still a little bit of pressure since non-horseplayers always seem to have high expectations.

In the second race yesterday at The Spa, our "syndicate" had the 6-7 exacta, straight, for $10. It was kind of exciting for the crowd to be waiting on the photo, but when it came up on the screen, I couldn't decipher it. I've got a copy of the famous triple dead heat photo from the 1944 Carter Handicap, and the photo from the 2nd at Saratoga yesterday couldn't have been more inscrutable to me. I'm glad it turned out as it did, though, because everyone went back to work happy.
