That is an interesting thought. Let's say Bernardini, Lava Man, and Invasor fail to win another race this year (certainly isn't likely, but anything can happen in this game) and some 50-1 outsider wins the classic. I wonder if there is any chance that Barbaro could still win this award. Finishing only 4 races would seem to eliminate him immediately, but he would certainly get the sentimentalist vote and he did win 4 graded stakes including the Derby and ran the most impressive single race of the year.
Well I suppose that in reality it is probably all but impossible for him to actually win it, but that is too bad because in my opinion he was definitely the best horse that any of us saw this year.
