The 2 rich n greedy NYC teams? One has a $200M payroll and the other $100M. Big difference. The Red Sox, Angels and White Sox have higher payrolls than the Mets. Half the league is within 25M of the Mets. The Yankees are the losers that have double everyones payroll and are fighting for their Wildcard life.

The Mets don't need Soriano. They are cruising to the playoffs. It is just wait and see who we are playing time.

Mets do not have 'playoff' pitching...They have good pitching but it isn't playoff caliber, besides Pedro.....

Mets have bought Beltran,Pedro,Delgado,etc,and (although they seem to be offensively "loaded,")won't surprise me if they try to get Soriano.Your right that they aren't that high salaried a team,and that's why I think they could afford to simply rent Soriano.Halos need a bat,but I doubt they get one of any significance.These 5 players on the Mets are all bought.They didn't groom them.Both New York teams are simply greedy,and try to buy rings.Yanks are obviously more pig-like,but the Mets are following their lead.

Its interesting that the Yankees are called "pig like" and that they buy championships. Yes, Steinbrenner has spent a ton of money on the yanks the last few years but he has been unable to "buy" a title. Take that in contrast to the recent Yankee dynasty. Those teams were composed of players that were predominantly either homegrown or acquired by trading homegrown prospects. The nucleus was all homegrown. Jeter,williams, posado,Pettite all came up through the yankee system.

Interestingly enough, the teams that have "bought" championships in recent years successfully have been the Marlins, dbacks and yes the red sox. When i say "bought" a title i mean that the core of the lineup was not homegrown.

Baseball has no salary cap. The Yankees bring in the most money via the cablevision deal and merchandizing not to mention ticket sales. Would people rather Steinbrenner kept the money instead of spending it on his team? If he did that, wouldnt people then call him "greedy"?

The blame for the vast disparity in payroll team by team lies purely in the corner of the league and the other owners. In football, what do you guys think Daniel Snyder or Jerry Jones would do if the rules were like they are in baseball? What DID Debartolo and Jack Kent Cooke do? Why didnt anyone ever accuse the niners or the skins of "buying" championships when they were in their heyday? What would Jerry Buss do in basketball if their were no luxury tax?

Steinbrenner plays within the rules and does his best to make the Yankees as competitive as possible. The Yankee organization should be commended for their constant dedication to winning.

But what are they supposed to do? Do you have a better idea? The Mets and Yankees are in the biggest city in the country. They compete in that city for business. They have the means to spend more than other teams- why shouldnt they?

Yes,I understand that they are doing exactly as much as what they can get away with.What I can't understand (at all,)is the sense of accomplishment that Yankee fans seem to feel when their 200 million dollar team beats teams with half their payroll.The only acceptable result should be winning the World Series.Then,one can tell us that the team (with 2x the payroll as anybody else,)has done something.It's one thing to have a team with 2x the pay as somebody else,but it is another thing to boast when that team makes the playoffs.Is it not absurd to do that?You spend 200 million? I think you might want to be expecting to to make the playoffs quite easily.Maybe by the middle of September.You don't see that?When you spend 200 mil a year,injuries should possibly effect winning the Championship(not the division.)

I agree with a lot of what you say. Personally, i think that many of the fans/ownership have ridiculous expectations. As a yankee fan, Im highly disappointed that the 200 mil that is spent is not directed more toward acquiring the best pitching money can buy. I wish more money was directed into the farm system to develop more young stars.

You say 200 million but how much is actually on the field? If you take into account injuries, what they trot out evey day is actually in the range of what the other contenders do.

The 200 million has not been wisely spent. Cashman is the most overrated GM in the business.
