He basically said if Antley cared so much about the horse how come he never even visited him between races. Say what you want....Lukas would know.

Lucas complained nearly a year after the Belmont, that Ant didn't come see how Charismatic was doing the day after the injury. What he didn't tell the reporter was that Ant flew to the West Coast the night of the Belmont Stakes and rode" Magicalmysterycat" to victory for Lucas the very next day in the Cinderella Stakes at Santa Anita. Lucas made several comments to reporters well after the Belmont race that he didn't think Ant rode Charismatic correctly that day. IMO he is still bitter about not winning the Triple Crown. Ant wasn't perfect, but there is no doubt his accomplishments on the track surely qualify him for the Hall of Fame.

He also talked about Antley never coming by the barn between races....I believe.

Antley gave Charismatic a horrendous ride in the Belmont. The unfortunate events after the race saved him from being murdered in the press.

Did anyone watch Pat Day on Legends? Stevens ask Day about his relationship with Lukas and all Day would say is that they had a love hate relationship. He elborated a little more stating that he would hire and fire Lukas and Lukas would hire and fire him. I got the impression that Day didn't want to talk about their relationship. A very awkward part of the interview.

Well that ride was pretty awful and the "vacation" was well warranted.

Say what you want about DWL, but he has go down as true pioneer in training. You don't win championships in Quarter Horse and thoroughbreds by accident. He is a great horseman and demands perfection from everyone he employs.

I agree with everything you said. He dominated the game for a long time. But some of the statements made by Lucas after Antley's death were disturbing to me.

Maybe he grew tired of hearing embellished stories about Antley. I think perhaps you need to look at it at least a little from his perspective. Antley wasn't exactly the guy the media sometimes portrayed him to be. Don't get me wrong, I have a great deal of sympathy for his problems, a great deal, and I am genuinely sorry for what happened to him, and wish the media hadn't enabled him during the TC of 1999, and even said so then, but Antley didn't exactly always seperate his problems from his job. Lukas probably just got weary from hearing a whole lot of BS and sounded off. Would it have been better left unsaid? Perhaps.....but that doesn't make Lukas wrong.

I agree. Usually after someone's death people have enough class to either find something nice to say about them or nothing. D. Wayne didn't have a horse in the derby and, needing attention, thought it was a good time to publicly bring up the fact that Chris Antley never took a genuine interest in Charasmatic. Don't remember if he was asked or not.

side note.. I believe Laffit Pincay was supposed to ride Charismatic but stayed in California to ride Event of The Year who finished up the track.

I used to routinely toss his horses from my bet. Very few times has it cost me. I think he went 1 in 90 at Santa Anita. When he went to Oaklawn he turned thing around a little.

Lucas "Charismatic was standing there in his stall, and we didn't know if he would live or die. Now, if you cared about the horse, don't you think you would walk the twenty feet to see him? I know I would. But he just got into the back of his limousine and drove away."

Lucas said this to a reporter at the barn after the Belmont, knowing full well he was riding Magicalmysterycat for him the next day in California. I can't see in any way how Lucas was being fair to Ant when he made that statement.
