Very few actually "back" them any more than a regular citizen backs the govt official who represents your area. Hell you may not have even voted for them but he/she represents you regardless.
I don't think thats a great comparison. I understand what you're saying, but everyone heard a lot of complaining that they were excluded from the vote, yet very few said anything.
