greyhounds make wonderful pets and companions--but just like a horse coming off the track they need significant retraining which most poeple are unable/incapable of doing

Actually, they require little retraining! Our first rescue came right off the track in Florida, he was housebroken (as are they all) and very mild-mannered. We tested him with cats...no problem! Other dogs...no problem! He was a big baby and, especially for a large breed, extremely nimble and coordinated. We lived in a small apartment at the time and he adjusted instantly...slept on the couch or on the guest bed. They don't bark and have no destructive habits. The ideal pet!! Only things to do special:
1. must be leash walked unless you have fenced yard
2. introduce him to glass sliding doors slowly, they can run right through them if not.
3. test them with small animals as many are still trained to kill rabbits and kittens.
4. get their teeth checked...they have bad teeth because of the diet of raw meat they are fed at the track.
Greyhounds make wonderful pets...the extreme abuse of the racing industry is why I will not support racing them, unlike horses, they are cheap to breed and cost little to maintain so...if there is any problem, they often get a hammer to the head or a bullet. It's a cruel sport and I stand with my PETA brothern here...IT SHOULD BE OUTLAWED!!! It's no better than dog fighting or **** fights!!

Somer, I read on some Greyhound sites that some of them do require housetraining and (very interesting) training to go up and down stairs. I guess it varies dog to dog?

Which is not to knock your post-- I am so envious that you adopt racing Greyhounds that I can't begin to articulate it! I adore them. When my husband and I finally live in a place that permits pets we decided we'll adopt one racing greyhound (for me) and one mutt (for him). That's so great that you've given a home to some of these retired racers. Three cheers for Somer!

Very few require house training as they spend all day in a cage and are left out only to "do their business" while in training. Stairs are a learning process for all dogs, our mastiff is four and still won't do stairs (since there are none except to basement, it's never been a problem. Greyhounds seem to learn extremely quickly and the only life-long problem is the need to keep them on lead when not in an enclosed area...oh yes, never put a Greyhound on an unattended long lead as the dog can break it's neck when it reaches the end. Also, electric "invisible" fences aren't a great idea as the dog is too fast and will run through the electric field before the current can be applied.

What's the deal with the glass doors? I've never had a dog that had trouble with that.Somer,do you have any guesses at what % of racehorses, and grey hounds live out their lives until a death by natural causes?
