Any opinions would be great, and if you do recommend it, what's a good place to live if I'm going to be working south of the river?

You hit the right town. A T-shirt you will see very often proclaims Keep Austin Weird. Clearly the most liberal cities of the big 4 in Texas. I would rank them from conservative to liberal in this order:

1. Dallas (by far the most conservative)
2. Houston
3. San Antonio
4. Austin (still highly influenced by UT so its gonna be more liberal)

I have a friend here that says he will not send his daughter to the University of Texas because its way too liberal. My daughter (the tree hugger; I hold her elementary school responsible) is set to go there after her upcoming senior year.
