Hickory, definately true, but even after he got off the bottle, he's never been a serious horse-bettor.

All I can say is the marketing of this DVD fits in with Bailey's image as a rider - out to find the best way to make the most bucks. Compare that to what other top jockeys are doing in retirement - working the backstretch as a minister, developing a jockey school, working as stewards or other officials, giving back to the sport rather than cashing in on it.

Our country was built on free enterprise, and it continues to thrive on that today. I don't see Bailey cashing in on this sport, instead, I see Bailey cashing in on Bailey--on his skill and his years of experience. I find nothing wrong there.

I believe this, along with the fact that not any of us are in the position to know what Jerry Bailey has done with a single dime of his income, his wealth.

Anonymity, void of the praise and view of others can be a tremendous gift. And it is often one's choice.

Bailey lives a couple miles from me. I've seen him several times at Home Depot; one week I saw him there two or three straight days. I was buying concrete; he was getting lumber. Talked to him once; a very nice guy. When I told him I bet against Silver Wagon (his last ride), he laughed and said he's never met anyone who bet ON the horse. Blue jeans, t-shirt, ballcap, pickup truck. Seemed like a regular guy. I'm glad he's doing well for himself.

Probably why he laughed at me.

I have no problem with Bailey making a living, like any retired athlete he has to find a new career. I can't see at all what's wrong with becoming an analyst.

I, too, have been curious about the DVDs, but it just seems a bit much money to me. Especially after what I spend on books.

Look, the man explains the game well - which a pretty good contribution to the sport, in my eyes. Why not do a DVD? And I do believe he is quite deserving of that Emmy nomination.

Okay, last summer at Saratoga, he's at a table signing his DVD, his book, any piece of paper a person shoves in front of him. As I'm walking by, a woman heads toward the table. The guard says, "The line forms here." There was no line, BTW, but she dutifully goes to the spot and then approaches the table. Bailey signs a piece of paper for her while she's looking him over. She looks at the signature, looks at him, asks, "Who are you?" (Cut to me, trying not to laugh.) Bailey looks momentarily startled, says, "Just ask around. I think you'll find out." I admit, I couldn't resist, move a few steps closer, and loudly ask him if he's going to be on the ESPN broadcast later that afternoon.

That's it, my Jerry Bailey story.

I don't hold that against him. He is not alone in terms of cashing in. Who doesn't do that? I think most jockeys would do it as well except that they can't because they don't have what it takes. I don't understand the criticism of Bailey that I often hear. When I listen to the man its no wonder he was so great on a horse, he thinks and has a brain. He seems confident but I don't hold that against him.
