I know how you feel, Don Guido. I suspect I could have done much better with the "dart board" approach, or perhaps the Trotter method if you remember the movie "Let It Ride."

(I'll be glad to elaborate if anyone is interested)

Stop me if you've seen the movie..... Let It Ride is the ultimate degenerate horseplayer movie. The central character was a taxi driver who overheard two of his passengers talking about a horse running the next day who couldn't lose. The fix was in. Naturally, at the end of his shift, he went to the track, bet that horse and it won. He kept betting all of his winnings on each succeeding race and kept winning, often at absurd odds. Thus the title - he let it ride. (Why his very large bets didn't ruin the odds remains a mystery to me, but why ruin a good story).

One of the techniques he used to pick a winner was to take the race program and ask people who they were betting. Each time he got an answer, he crossed that name off of the entry list. When there was only one name left on the list, one that no one liked, that was his bet....... naturally, he won, because, as he memorably put it, "I'm having a very good day."

I've seen it, but been awhile so couldn't remember all the details. Great movie with Terri Garr and Robby Coltrane(Dumbledore). Always liked all these actors. Dreyfus made several good ones for a while there like The Goodbye Girl, American Graffiti, Jaws, but recent efforts not so great.
