I can't think of a better way to usher in summer than a trip to the Jersey Shore. Brings back some pleasant personal memories also.

YOU PROBABLY WONT APPRECIATE THIS
BUT ITS A REAL LIFE INCIDENT

WHILE TRAVELING ON DOG SHOW CIRCUIT
I WAS SLEEPING IN BACK OF THE VAN
SUDDENLY I WAS AWAKENED
BY A HORRENDOUS ODOR

I AKED MY HUSBAND WHO WAS DRIVING
WHAT IS THAT HORRID SMELL?

HE REPLIED
NEW JERSEY

Yes, although most of the state is beautiful, when you get near the coast and some of the shipping ports, it can smell like a gigantic out house.

The State of New Jersey has always gotten a bad rap for just a few really obnoxious places. Unfortunately, they are located where lots of travelers see and smell them and judge accordingly. The refineries of Linden are right next to one of the most heavily traveled parts of the Jersey Turnpike. If you drive by at night you can see the open fires from the cracking towers. Anywhere near Camden, on the approaches to Philadelphia, you can smell the distinct aroma of the Campbell Soup works. You're probably much too young to recall that at one time Secaucus had a number of pig slaughterhouses. As you approached the Lincoln Tunnel from the Jersey turnpike the aroma was overwealming. That was all cleaned up and now Secaucus has become a hub for outlet malls.

But for those assaults on the senses (and I guess you had better include Atlantic City as well), most of the State is clean and beautiful, although perhaps a bit too congested for some tastes. It does not deserve its reputation.

Being a resident of New Jersey I think we should table this discussion until we hear from our local expert NJ Stinks.

My hometown in south Arkansas is about 30 miles from a plant that makes paper out of pine trees. Noxious smell would sometimes drift over to my town. apparently some pretty bad smelling chemicals used in the making of paper, but possibly the worst place that I have ever encountered is in Texas. Not sure the name of the town, but it is a very large place in which cattle are penned up. Not sure for what purpose. Not beef cows, but dairy cows. Located right next to the interstate that goes East and West (I-40). You can smell it for miles before you get to it and several after you have passed it.

As for New Jersey, I have some friends that live there. One of them regularly posts pictures to facebook of the seashore and various state parks and other places of interest. The pictures are very appealing.

For the record, I chose NJ Stinks in horseracing chatrooms for two reasons:

1) NJ would not allow ADW's. Supposedly to protect Monmouth and the Meadowlands. So I kept going to Philly to play because it was right across the river. Lots of South Jersey horseplayers did the same and NJ lost a ton a handle. Now NJ allows one ADW - TVG - which also Stinks. But one is better than none.

2) The NJ Racing Commission could not care less about Garden State. So GS got the dates Monmouth and the Meadowlands didn't want - namely February to May. Also, no effort was made to protect GS trotters either. I get that nobody liked Robert Brennan but....
